A French woman drinks makgeolli in Korea after losing her source of income, then teaches French to two Korean women. Quoted in Close-Up: The Best Films and Other Findings of 2024 (2024). Iris is French but stays in Korea for now. We have no idea why she ended up here, but we know she needs to make ends meet, so she gets creative and starts teaching French using her unique « method. » Very down-to-earth yet very poetic, the film revolves around language and communication in a strange way. And sometimes misunderstandings. Or the refusal to communicate or listen. Also, it’s about the social and interpersonal distance between people who know each other and those who don’t, and how this « accepted » distance can change or vary depending on different factors such as cultural norms, place of conversation, mood, etc. The plot is simple, but what interests us more are the nuances. We are not interested in what will HAPPEN to Iris or the other characters, but how they will react at a certain point in the conversation, what they will feel and say and how they will do it. Moreover, Iris’ character is really interesting and some small parts of her true self are gradually revealed, but there is still a lot left for us to think about. Very subtle, authentic and elaborate work that is simple at the same time.
